A federal judge ordered that the Donald Trump administration stop indiscriminate immigration raids in southern California (U.S.) in which people are arrested based on racial profiling, such as skin color or the language they speak. Judge Maame Frimpong also issued an order prohibiting the federal government from restricting lawyers’ access to a migrant detention center in Los Angeles.

The magistrate’s ruling follows a lawsuit filed last week in a California district court by individuals impacted by the raids and human rights groups, who denounce multiple constitutional violations and instances of racial discrimination during the operations. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) denied these accusations.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California (ACLU SoCal), one of the groups representing the plaintiffs, detailed in a statement that the judge’s order prohibits immigration agents from detaining people without reasonable suspicion.

It also prohibits detentions based on race or ethnicity, speaking Spanish or English with an accent; type of employment; and being present in certain places like bus stations, car washes, or agricultural fields. The second order requires DHS to provide access to a lawyer on weekdays, weekends, and holidays to people detained in B-18, the federal building in downtown Los Angeles.

The text reads: L.A. Mayor Karen Bass signed an executive order to protect immigrant communities against immigration raids promoted by President Trump’s administration, described as “illegal and chaotic.”

The lawsuit was prompted by an incident on June 22, when masked men wearing barely identifiable Border Patrol vests violently detained several workers—an event captured in videos that quickly went viral.

Immigration raids in L.A. metropolitan area began a month ago and have generated strong social rejection and even intense clashes with agents, turning California into a symbol of resistance against Trump’s Government.
